KISS *

I have a hard time with Keepin' it Simple. The more I try to be creative, the messier it becomes.

This is my attempt at decorating cookies, which were yummy and pre-baked (not by me). It goes to show that me and sis are no artists. At this point, I was very frustrated as to why my parents did not bless me with creative drawing abilities. Why!

Here are some creations by people who do have that creative bone in them.

Behold, the Pimple Cookie.

And the Sweetheart Snowmen Couple. ♥‿♥

Thousand Island Sauce on Shrimp and Broccoli

I recently had an excellent lunch at Keung's Delight 強記雞粥. My mouth is salivating just thinking of the delicious dishes I had that day. In the past, I ordered Portuguese Style Chicken on Rice, Spaghetti Bolognese, or some kind of rice noodle or other. The flavours were nothing special; nothing to rave about nor complain about. I didn't find their food particularly tasty...until I started ordering the right dishes. I mean, there's so many patrons there all the time, surely there has to be a reason for that! And cheap isn't one of them, not that their food is considered pricey. So they must be doing something right with the food. Okay, enough talking, let's get down to the two dishes I realy, really enjoyed and that I will for sure order again when I go back. ^o^

This is the Thousand Island Sauce on Shrimp and Brocolli. So flavourful, so fresh and so mouthwateringly delicious! Maybe I am biased because I love broccoli regardless, but the shrimp was also really good with the Thousand Island sauce (which I had a love/hate relationship with until I realized that that's the exact sauce that's served with the Green Salad at Japanese Restaurants...! And then of course, from then on, it was only love). But anyway, back to the shrimp. Rest assured, they do not give you the cheapy dinky kind. You won't be disappointed. I want to buy it as take-out and pretend that I cooked it. It's THAT good.

Of course, you also need your carbs. And you won't go wrong if you order the Soft Shell Crab Fried Rice. It is fantastic. So good. Couldn't get enough of it.

But we were so stuffed. Between 2 people we had the above 2 dishes and a Spaghetti Bolognese (skip this) and a Mixed Fruit Drink (also skippable), which turned out to be Canned Fruit and Sprite. With it being $2.99, I should have probably guessed it wouldn't be one of those awesome special real fruit drinks. But anyway, we ended up finishing none and having to pack up all 3 dishes! Portions are HUGE! Go with at last 4 people if you are going to order more than 2 dishes. Hope you enjoy your experience when you go there. And if you've been there before, please share what other dishes are NOM-worthy in the comment section below! ت

Latte Machiatto

It's been awhile since I had a good Latte Machiatto! It was funny when I was coming home last night, I saw a billboard that Starbucks had created a coffee for 'People who didn't think they liked Starbucks Coffee' (something along the lines of that anyway)! I thought it was a very clever statement and very tongue in cheek and I couldn't help but break out into a quiet chuckle. The advertising may be effective in capturing the attention of those coffee drinkers who are indifferent to brands or enjoy a leisurely cup every now and then --- just not the coffee connoisseurs. It's not that I don't like Starbucks, but I don't love it the same way like a lot of people that I know do. I think I've had it so many times that my taste buds have gotten overly accustomed to its usual flavours that it's gotten a bit bland for me.

It just makes me want to venture out and try something different, something unfamiliar; and that something is usually not as accessible, but definitely worth the while, once you find what you've been looking for.

I was lucky to have stumbled upon Novecento Caffe (major intersections are Dufferin and St. Clair West) where one of my job interviews were being held. Looks very classy on the outside, doesn't it? Feels like I am in Italy!

The interior gives off an old world charm that I really like. I could spend hours there (which is exactly what I did)! Very cozy, with Italian music and TV broadcasts in the background, older Italian men chatting the day away and naturally, it has a huge bar area, reminiscent of the cafe shops in Europe.

On their menu, they serve the standard coffee drinks and tea fare, but also the Caffe Veneziano and the Caffe Shekerato which are new to me, a few selections of paninis, sliced cake and gelato (which is apparently homemade and really good from the reviews I read. I don't think I saw any being put out when I was there yesterday. Perhaps because of the terrible weather, there weren't a lot of patrons, but usually, they are busy until 6pm and then from 8pm to close, for the after dinner crowd).

I ordered a latte and it is seriously the best cafe latte I have had in awhile. They call it Latte Machiatto here, but it's all the same to me. ᵔᴥᵔ

The cakes on their menu include: Chocolate Mousse Cake, Strawberry Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cheesecake, Carrot Cake, Mixed Berry Cake and Tiramisu.

I opted for the Mixed Berry Cake. It was a little more sour than sweet, with a prominent tang, but I still really enjoyed it. They took care to make it all pretty with the cherry sauce and dusting it with powdered sugar.

The owners (I assume the older men were the owners!) were so nice!! I had problems connecting to the Internet and they helped me out. They told me the password was 'espresso' and I told them that it didn't work when I tried typing it out and asked them if they could find the router. He wrote it out to me on a piece of paper, thinking that I probably didn't speak much English and I know I'm not the brightest kid on the block so it didn't click until then that I didn't even think to type 'ESPRESSO' in CAPITALS to try that out. So I told them that they could stop looking for it and that I had access now. And that was it. Problem solved. #sodumb #whatanidiotiare

When my latte was all cold after the hour+ long interview, the man came over and offered to warm it up for me, free of charge, but what he ended up doing was filling the whole cup up with steamed milk! It's like a got a 2nd drink for free! I wasn't expecting that and it made me very happy to receive such kindness and generosity. I ended up tipping close to 25% which is a first, and although the items on their menu might be on the pricier side, it's worth it for the ambience, great service and superb latte. ♥‿♥

I felt compelled to write this full-on blog entry even though that was not my original intention with this food blog, which was to keep things short and sweet. But I had such a great experience at Novecento Caffe, that I couldn't not share about what made it so awesome for me. I hope that if you decide to visit this establishment (and please do support local small businesses and entrepreneurialism!) that you too, receive the same warm service that I did.

I don't know when I'll be back, but I definitely want to experience the after-dinner, caffe-filled vibe. To try a different cake this time and of course, another perfectly poured Latte Machiatto!

Turkey Melt

Lola's Commissary (or Lola's Kitchen) serves up the best Turkey Melt that the city has to offer! You have to get this if you decide to go there. It is pure yumness. Even the salad is spot-on. I love the ambience, chill vibe and its minimal but artistic decor that is strategically placed along the walls of the restaurant.

{ Turkey Melt } Shaved roasted Ontario turkey breast with pickled red onion, cranberry mustard & double creme brie cheese on grilled multigrain bread with arugula & balsamic syrup.

Brie! Double brie! Need I say more? ^‿^

Minced Pork Rice

Serissa Cate serves up the most value for your buck when it comes to their Minched Pork Rice, totaling a whopping $3.99.
I love it! Tastes great too!

My favourite drink there is the Black Diamond Green Tea Red Bean Slush. It is SO GOOD... until about 3/4 of the way when it becomes super diluted and starts tasting like water. I thought mixing it with my straw before I drank any of it would make it better but it didn't really help. Still, I keep going back for the same drink because I can't get enough of it. Less sugar is probably better for me anyway! And they were doing a 1/2 off on all their speciality slushie drinks a month ago, because it's winter and I guess people tend to opt for more winter-appropriate drinks... but not me! So I got my yummy usual AND a deal. ٩(^‿^)۶

Serissa Cate serves up quite a few creative offerings that you would not find at a typical bubble tea shop, such as the Black Diamond Wintermelon Slush or The OZ, which has pudding in it. Give them a try today and let me know what you think! ت

Napolean Styled Black Sesame Ice Cream

I've always dreamed of having a fabulous food blog to collect all my favourite food memories in and be able to share it with family, friends and other foodie friends out there! This is my first attempt at exclusively writing about and showcasing food, so let's hope that I can keep it that way and not go off tangent about other things. シ

Let's start off with a dessert dish that I really enjoyed recently.

This is the Napolean Styled Black Sesame Ice Cream I had at Phoenix Restaurant. Its flakey goodness balanced the richness of the {absolutely divine} flavour of black sesame.

Click here for the link to Phoenix Restaurant's website for more information.

Enjoy!
